Why are We Named Israel? Exploring our Complex Biblical Namesake

  • Lehrhaus 425 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 USA (map)

Well into adulthood, the Biblical forefather Jacob took the name Israel, a name that came to stand for the whole Jewish people: the people Israel, am Yisrael. What might Jacob/Israel’s life and names tell us about Jewish identity? What kinds of change and continuity does our namesake call us to? Join musician Ezra Furman in exploring names, identity, and Jewish peoplehood through the lens of the Jacob narrative.

Ezra “Liz” Furman is a songwriter and student of Torah. She has released multiple albums as well as music for the soundtrack of the Netflix show Sex Education. She co-hosts a podcast about the Jewish holidays called 2 Queers 4 Questions.
