About Lehrhaus
Mission
We’re not-for-profit, Jewish tavern and house of learning on a mission to put gathering, joy, and text at the center of Jewish life through exceptional hospitality and Jewish learning.
We see a future with Lehrhaus locations around the world serving as beacons of joyful Jewish community, helping to create Jewish learners, project positive and diverse experiences of Jewish life, and be the locus of important conversations and deep connections.
History
Lehrhaus opened its doors in Somerville, Massachusetts, in the spring of 2023.
Inspired by Franz Rosenzweig’s Freie Jüdische Lehrhaus or Free Jewish House of Learning of the 1920s, Rabbi Charlie Schwartz and Joshua Foer founded Lehrhaus as a new kind of Jewish space that integrates Jewish learning, community and food in unique and engaging ways.
Our Lehrhaus aims to revive and modernize Rosenzweig’s institution for today's world, creating a vibrant, and delicious, hub for Jewish life that is open to all.
Food & Drinks
Lehrhaus is proud to be a new type of kosher restaurant, breaking boundaries and setting new standards.
Our food menu was crafted in partnership with renowned Boston area chef Michael Levitan in partnership with our chefs Noah Clickstein and Alex Artianian.
Our mixed drinks were developed by Naomi Levy, an internationally acclaimed, award-winning bartender, who collaborated with the Lehrhaus bar team to create craft mixed-drinks and spirit-free drinks.
Both our food and drink are infused with the flavors of Jewish communities worldwide.
We are honored to have been named one of Esquire Magazine's Best New Restaurants of 2023, the first kosher restaurant to receive this award. We have also received glowing write-ups in Eater and the Boston Globe.
House of Learning
Inspired by the 1920s Lehrhaus in Frankfurt, Germany, our modern Lehrhaus in Somerville, Massachusetts, serves as a contemporary Beit Midrash, or house of learning, for the 21st century.
We offer a wide range of events, classes, and educational opportunities, bringing the richness of Jewish learning to our community in innovative and engaging ways.
Non-Profit
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we rely on your generous support to continue our mission of fostering a thriving Jewish community where everyone can learn, connect, and take pride in being Jewish.
Now more than ever, the world needs beacons of joyful Jewish life, and Lehrhaus is dedicated to being one of those beacons.
While 80% of our funding comes from food, drink, and programming revenue, we depend on our community's support through donations from large and small donors to sustain our efforts.
See Lehrhaus for yourself.
Whether you're here to enjoy a meal, attend a class, or simply connect with the community, Lehrhaus welcomes you.
