Redeeming our Captives: Jewish Viewpoints on the Hostage Crisis

  • Lehrhaus 425 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 USA (map)

The question of captive release has sadly become a central one in Israel today. Over 200 men, women, and children have been held hostage since the 7th of October. As Israelis and the world start focusing on hostage release, questions arise: what price should we pay for the redemption of our captives? Is there a price which is too high? Through the ages and recently, thinkers and rabbis have asked these questions from various Jewish ethical viewpoints. While multiple global policymakers will ultimately make decisions, our Jewish tradition can be informative in helping us structure an ethical viewpoint.
