The Secret Mind of Bertha Pappenheim

  • Lehrhaus 425 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 USA (map)

Gabriel Brownstein will discuss his new book: The Secret Mind of Bertha Pappenheim: The Woman Who Invented Freud's Talking Cure. Bertha Pappenheim, when she was younger, was the patient whom Freud called "Anna O." It was Anna O who named "the talking cure." When she was older, Pappenheim was the most important feminist in the German speaking world--and she had no interest in Freud or psychoanalysis. Brownstein's new book examines the stories that surround this remarkable woman. Publisher's Weekly gave the book a starred review, and said, "This captivates." The Wall Street Journal called the book "fascinating." And the New York Times said, "This is a memoir nestled in an investigation, hidden inside a mythology. And it’s really about the limits of knowledge: not just about what we know about Pappenheim, but about medicine specifically and about nonfiction in general.” Come hear Gabriel Brownstein discuss his book--and the life and mystery of Bertha Pappenheim.

Gabriel Brownstein is the author of four books, most recently The Secret Mind of Bertha Pappenheim. He's a professor in the English department at St. John's University. For his short fiction he has won a PEN/Hemingway Award and a Pushcart Prize.
