In partnership with Keshet:
Join us to screen and discuss THE EIGHTH DAY, a Jewish comedy short film exploring circumcision and contemporary queer Jewish parenting. Filmmakers Jonah Weinstein and Gene Goldstein-Plesser will attend for the screening, Q&A, and text study about the Jewish sources and discussions that shaped the script.
Film Synopsis: Noah and Jonah are gay Jewish husbands and new parents to a baby boy. When Noah and Jonah's parents arrive at their home expecting a traditional bris for their grandson, Noah and Jonah are forced to reveal that they had something very different in mind for their son: no circumcision.
Jonah Weinstein is a filmmaker and producer. He was an associate producer on Awkwafina is Nora From Queens (Comedy Central) and produced the upcoming Jewish romantic comedy, 31 Candles. He was a cohort member of Hineni: LGBTQ+ Jewish Stories with The Generations Project. Raised in Cleveland, Ohio, he is currently based in Los Angeles. His last visit to Boston was to run the Boston Marathon in 2022.
Gene Goldstein-Plesser still moonlights as a queer Jewish community organizer. He previously managed Bay Area programming for Keshet, a national Jewish LGBTQ+ organization. An alumni of the Dorot Fellowship in Israel, Gene co-founded the Jerusalem Queer Beit Midrash and received a Masters of Arts in Conflict Research from Hebrew University. Returning to his ancestral home of Brooklyn in 2020, he helps coordinates prayer services for the Atara Minyan, runs meetings for his local block association, and co-produces communal events with his housemates. During the day, he advises NYC non-profits on their real estate strategy.
