Tattooing God’s Body: The Imprint of a Relationship

  • Lehrhaus 425 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 USA (map)

Traditional Judaism forbids tattooing our bodies, but the mystical traditions give a handful of examples in which we “tattoo” God. Come explore how the tradition imagines us inscribing things into the Divine "body." What do these ideas tell us about our relationship with the Divine? We will look at texts from across over a thousand years of Jewish mystical traditions, including texts from late antiquity mysticism, medieval Kabbalah, and early modern Hasidic thought. No previous experience is needed; texts will be explored in English translation alongside the original Hebrew/Aramaic.

In his spare time, he creates daily(ish) memes about Talmud and Kabbalah (IG: jewishyomemes), bakes babka/challah of wacky and delicious flavors, and plays archery dodgeball.
