Join us for a captivating shi'ur (class) where the enjoyment of alcoholic beverages is warmly encouraged. As part of my journey toward greater observance in Judaism, I often heard that there are two occasions when getting drunk is commanded: Simḥat Torah and Purim. Together, we'll explore the intriguing presence of fermented drinks in the Tanakh, setting the stage for our main discussion. Our focus will be a fascinating passage from the Talmud Bavli (Megillah 7b), where one sage slaughters another—only for the narrative to take a surprising twist with his resurrection. We’ll then explore the evolution of rabbinic interpretations surrounding a pivotal phrase from this passage. This engaging exploration promises to deepen your understanding of these rich texts while providing a welcoming and spirited atmosphere. (Although, the spirited atmosphere may partially depend on how many spirits you’ve consumed!)
