Scandalous Heroism: Judith's Story and the Cheesy Hanukkah Tradition

  • Lehrhaus 425 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 USA (map)

So many of us are familiar with the connection between fried foods and Hannukah, but did you know there’s also a tradition to eat cheese? Tracing this tradition back to the story of Judith, participants will gain a deeper understanding of her scandalous story and how her bravery and heroism led to this delicious tradition!

Rabbi Raysh Weiss is delighted to return to Lehrhaus. She is a Co-Senior Rabbi at Temple Israel of Natick, was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary, and holds a PhD from the University of Minnesota in Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies . She is known for putting more effort into faking other languages and musical instruments than it would take to actually learn them, writing controversial teshuvot (Jewish legal responsa), political cartooning the Yiddish Forverts, panicking, and drinking tea. As both a congregational rabbi and a co-parent of young children, she is often found saying, 'We don't eat that.'
