Sacred Sound: Jewish Music As Holiness Beyond Space and Time

  • Lehrhaus 425 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 USA (map)

Immerse yourself in the transcendent power of Jewish sacred music, a tradition that connects us to holiness beyond the boundaries of space and time. This session will offer a dynamic blend of learning and practice, guiding participants through three profound dimensions of this sacred art. We will explore the ancient connection between music and prophecy, uncovering how melodies have long served as vessels for divine inspiration. We'll delve into niggunim, the wordless devotional melodies beloved by the Chassidim, experiencing their unique ability to open hearts and elevate the soul. Finally, we’ll engage with the transformative practice of Hebrew chant, a rich tradition that has been revitalized in progressive Judaism by Rabbi Shefa Gold, blending timeless wisdom with contemporary mindfulness.

Ariel Hendelman is a Senior Rabbinic student with the Aleph Ordination Program, the Spiritual Leader of B'nai Or Boston, and a teacher of meditation and chant in many spaces online and in-person. Her debut album, Prayers for Fire & Water, was released last year. In her free time, Ariel enjoys listening to vinyl with her cat Ezra.
