Lehrhaus Founder Franz Rosenzweig's 1921 work The Star of Redemption, constitutes a major contribution to both the traditions of western philosophy and Jewish thought. It is a multifaceted and difficult book, and the purpose of this series of meetings is to work through the content of Rosenzweig's Star through group reading and discussion. As a diverse intellectual community, we can hope to better understand the powerful themes of the book, and its consequences in our own lives. Participants should come with a copy of William Hallo's 1985 edition, and should endeavor to read the specified section before the course meeting if possible.
Class Meeting 1: Part I Introduction (pp. 3-22): In the introduction, Rosenzweig motivates his project in The Star of Redemption -- the construction of a complete post-idealist system of philosophy -- through his sketch of the history of philosophy, a preliminary discussion of the three proto-cosmic elements (God, world, and man), and a series of insights that point toward his own method in coming to a logical understanding of these elements.
