Mishpatim: Personhood and Abortion in Jewish Sources

  • Lehrhaus 425 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 USA (map)

Repro Shabbat is an annual Shabbat celebration that honors the Jewish value of reproductive freedom. It takes place annually on Parshat Mishpatim, which contains the verses commonly referenced as the foundation of Judaism’s approach to reproductive health, rights, and justice. We are all impacted by access to reproductive health care in different ways. We come to Repro Shabbat ready to explore our tradition’s wisdom on reproductive health, our work in the political world to advocate for just access and knowing that our own stories matter. Your story matters. During this class we will read from Exodus 21:22-25 and discuss how it serves as the underlying basis for Jewish views on abortion.

Kristen Strezo is a fighter, social justice advocate, single mom, former punk rock singer, former co-chair of the Somerville Commission for Women, journalist and proud Somerville resident. As a life member of the National Council of Jewish Women, Kristen carries with her the issues of reproductive freedom and abortion access from a Jewish perspective.
