Rabbi Regina Jonas: Why don’t we know her name?

  • Lehrhaus 425 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 USA (map)

Regina Jonas was the first female rabbi in the modern world. Ordained in Berlin in 1935, she served the Jewish community in Germany and in the Theresienstadt concentration camp until 1944, when she was murdered in Auschwitz. We’ll explore why she was forgotten and what changes when we write her back into history.

Taught by Dr. Judith Rosenbaum, executive director of the Jewish Women’s Archives.

This class is part of the Lehrhaus Oktoberfest celebrations and is generously sponsored by the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Boston.
