An Unlikely Revolutionary: Celebrating The Life and Legacy of Sarah Schenirer

  • Lehrhaus 425 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 USA (map)

A Hasidic divorcee in interwar Poland with little formal education, Sarah Schenirer was an unlikely revolutionary. And yet, she changed the course of Jewish history as the founder Bais Yaakov, the first successful school system to give Jewish girls a religious education after millennia of scholastic disenfranchisement. Now in its second century of operation, Bais Yaakov has touched the lives of students and graduates while also inspiring the expansion of Torah opportunities for women, including Orthodox rabbinic training.

Whether you are a Bais Yaakov affiliate or new to Sarah Schenirer’s story, join us to hear about Frau Schenirer, learn some of her Torah, and celebrate her remarkable legacy on her 90th yahrtzeit.

Rabbanit Talia Weisberg is a connector, passionate about facilitating rich Jewish experiences and helping people make informed Jewish decisions. She is currently pursuing a PhD in religion at Boston University, learned Torah at both Yeshivat Maharat and Bais Yaakov, and earned an AB in religion at Harvard University. She loves to learn and teach about the weekly parsha, women in Jewish text and tradition, kashrut, and the development of halacha. As a Va’Tichtov fellow, she is working on a book about animals in the Torah. She lives in Cambridge with her family.
